The day Afton was Born

Afton was born on April 18, 2006. She came that day because her mom mowed the lawn the night before to hurry things along, it worked! Abby was in labor for several hours before we felt it was time to head to the hospital, I think we got there between 11 and 12 at night. We were checked in and given a room, and as I started to unpack the nurse told us that Abby wasn't quite ready and we should go home.

We went home, and unbeknownst to us (being first timers and all) soon after we got there Abby's water broke. Abby had a really painful labor, she had back labor. I tried to be helpful and walk with her but she was in so much pain she asked me to go to bed! Not knowing what to do I went to bed for a few hours. I could hear Abby moaning in pain and I felt like a jerk, but there was really nothing that I could have done.

About three in the morning I called the Hospital and reported the latest and we were told to come right in. Now I had been on a medical driving restriction because of my epilepsy, but Abby was in no condition to drive and I felt fine so I drove her to the hospital. It didn't take much time after we were checked back in that Abby had to start to push. I think that within a half hour of our arrival she was fully dialated. In fact, the technitial who gave Abby her epidural did it in the middle of one her contractions. The doctors and nurses told Abby not to push or the tech could make a mistake and paralize her. Comforting thought in such an awkard position.

Abby successfully receive her epidural and at about 10 am Afton was born. When she was born she popped her head out really fast and looked up and began to scream. We started to cry. The doctor delivered our baby and let me but the cord. After Abby held her the nurses took Afton to a special crib with a heat lampt and cleaned her up. But as soon as they placed her down she Afton pooped. She was so little, so skinny. She was 19 inches and 6 lbs 2 oz.
