So, Abby bought me an iTunes gift card for my birthday, and while I like music I am illiterate. Therefore, I need help choosing what songs (not albums) I should get. Right now I pretty much only listen to Jack Johnson and Shakira so I really need help branching out and trying something new. Please, educate me and broaden my musical horizons.

You should go check out my blog I've got some goodies on there - at least I like em. AND happy late b-day!
AND sooooo sorry to hear you lost all those photos. That is heartbreaking!
Try Colbie Caillat (I guess that´s her name)...then I tell me what you thought about her songs.
I have been into the classic rock stuff as of late. Tom Petty has some good stuff (free falling, learning to fly, won't back down), Eric Clapton is always good, Queen has a few good songs ( I want to break free, Don't stop me now)Hmmm, that is all I cant think of off the top of my head. Good luck. You will have to let us know what you decide on!
Sample songs from any of these bands:
Foo Fighters: Times Like These, Everlong, All My Life, Big Me, Learn to Fly
The Killers: All These Things That I've done, Mr. Brightside
Flogging Molly: Drunken Lullabies, The Killburn High Road, Rebels of the Sacred Heart, Requiem for a Dying Song
Dropkick Murphys: I'm Shipping up to Boston, Famous for Nothing
All American Rejects: Dirty Little Secret, Move Along, Swing Swing
Weezer: Pork and Beans,The Greatest Man that Ever Lived
Good Luck
I'm a classic "jazz" freak:
Anything Norah Jones of Diana Krall (modern day with the great "jazz" sound).
Ella Fitzgerald
Louis Armstrong
Billie Holiday (I may have spelled that wrong but that is how you say it!)
Lena Horne
And I love Beyonce...did I just type that out loud??
Jared,
The first recommendation that comes to mind is the band Fleet Foxes because I've been stuck on them a lot lately and they have such a pleasant and timeless sound that I can't imagine much of anyone not enjoying their music. All of their songs are great, but among the best are "Ragged Wood," and "White Winter Hymnal," and anything off their Sun Giant EP.
A couple of albums I've just loved in the past year or two are Radiohead's In Rainbows and Feist's The Reminder. Again, these albums are totally solid from beginning to end, but my favorites from the Radiohead album are "All I Need," "15 Steps," "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi," and "Reckoner," while the best hits from Feist's album are "I Feel It All," "My Moon My Man," and "1234."
I could go on and on with stuff (and I know I already have), but I'll stop after one last suggestion. If you are feeling sonically adventurous, the new Animal Collective comes out on Tuesday (the vinyl version came out two weeks ago and I already have it). Try "Brother Sport," "My Girls," "Summertime Clothes," or "Bluish." This band is pretty much the top of the heap for weird, fun, experimental pop music, if you are open to it. The album these tracks are from is called Merriweather Post Pavilion, by the way.
Let everyone know what you end up getting and liking!
Oh boy where do I start? Ready, set, don't get Colbie Collet! You are a man, and need great man music....that, of course, can also be shared with other non men. Here are some gems: Glove & special sauce (babies got sauce), Amos Lee-really soulful accoustic LOVE HIM (Colors, Supply and Demand)Death Cab For Cutie (Title and Registration)Ben Kweller (In Other Words)The Beautiful Girls (La Mar, and Music)<--MUST PURCHASE Mason Jennings is the lead singer and he's solo now on Jack Johnsons label...check him out too. (Living in the moment) Donovan Frankenreiter (It Don't Matter)John Mayer (Belief) Coldplay (Viva La Vida) I could go on for ages but I'll spare you....yes I'm obsessed with music.
No ripping on anyone else's music please - This is a feel good blogging spot.
Ummm. I don't think that there is room for anything else-- ditto to the above. Here is what we have downloaded lately:(No laughing, please...)
Belinda Carlisle
WHAM (I did, not Rich)
Alison Krauss
Simple Minds
Cheap Trick
Gun's and Roses
Erasure
A-Ha
Sheriff (You ought to hear LO hold out the long note at the end of their ballad...He does it in sacrament mtg now.)
The girls are learning the songs (with a few exceptions) quite well. If you really want to branch out try some REAL classics:
Borodin String Quartets No. 1 &2
Bedrich Smetana:Mein Vaterland (very beautiful)
I am liking Mendelssohn a lot lately....so there you go, now you have the whole spectrum from everyone!
