The Story of the Fourth

Once upon a time a little family decided to go on a camping trip to celebrate the 4th of July. They packed up their van with all the things they thought they would need. Saying goodbye to the city, they smiled for one last picture of the kids not caked in dirt.Driving to Cascade Lake they hoped and hoped that by some stroke of luck they would find a camping spot. After searching for a couple of hours, the little family hit the jackpot! The last spot on the whole lake was theirs! They quickly set up camp and let the little ones giggle and wiggle in the tent. With no delay they had hit the water where the little girl showed off her newly learned swimming techniques. As they relaxed in the dwindling shade after lunch, the little family felt happy in their nature spot. The weather was hot and the mosquitoes were soon out in force. So the little family tried to cool off by dipping their toes in the lake off the dock. Oh, the water felt so nice! As a spur of the moment leap both the dad and the little girl had jumped into the water! After making some yummy dinner, the little family took a walk and got really, really dusty. The little boy was in heaven being able to toddle along where he wanted and get into all the dirt, rocks, sticks and bugs he could get his hands on.
Before long the mosquitoes had taken over the area so the mom (who is tasty to bugs like Bella is to Edward) had to hide in the tent so as not to be completely eaten away.
The next morning after a good night's sleep, some yummy campfire pancakes, another small hike, and some more mosquitoes, the little family packed up their gear. They headed to a 4th of July parade, small-town style. The little family got loaded up with about three pounds of candy and some nostalgia for their former small-town home. The little girl was giddy! The little boy was tired. The drive home was full of naps, itching mosquito bites, and that happy feeling you get when you have done something fun. Getting home, the little family started to wash everything. Like any good parents would do, they put the little kids to work cleaning the car, then put them in the bathtub.

And they all lived, happily ever after! The End.

Oh, perfectly perfect way to celebrate a holiday! Thank you for the perfect bedtime story! (And I'm sitting in my basement itching all my delicious mosquito bites too! I loved the Bella to Edward analogy...makes it seem more romantic that the mosquitoes will attack me over any other blood carrying human!)

So fun! I can't believe Ben is such a little walker! Tessa won't take a step yet. She prefers crawling.

Loved the story! (Much more entertaining than ours:) How fun! I love Afton's poses-- she is the bomb. I love how "little boy" Ben is looking!!

Do you think I could hire those two to wash our car?

I love the way you write, Abby. I can just hear your voice in my head when I read it too, and that makes it all the better! You know, I kind of envy you being up there in a different part of the world with your little family. I'm sure you'd love to be closer to your parents, but I think it's kind of nice that you guys get to choose your own adventures most of the time, rather than having to haggle over who is doing what with which family like we do every holiday. I guess each situation has its ups and downs. Cute, cute story.

What a cute post! Camping with little kids is so much work, but so much fun! We went camping with Mel and Michael last summer, so this post reminded me of that. What a cute family you have!
