First Day of School

There has been much anticipation for the first day of school this year! We searched and found the right backpack and got a new school shirt for Afton just for the occasion. Even though she didn't hesitate to brag about already going to school when she was 2, our daughter was completely giddy to start school now that she's 3. I'm doing a co-op with some great neighbors. The kids are adorable and smart and live close. What more could we ask for? Oh yeah, it's free.
Afton was ready by 7:30am yesterday (even though school didn't start until 9) and asked me every few minutes if it was time for school yet. When the time finally came, we walked around the block with big smiles. All of us. Since I was interested in keeping some continuity in our teaching approaches, I sat in for the first few minutes of the school. But I wasn't wanted. Afton kept telling me, "Mom! I want you to GO. I'll be alright. Time for you to leave." And she'd say it in that way that kids do: kind of under her breath and with a sideways glance as if I were embarrassing her there in front of the other kids. Wow.
So I left school and got home, looking forward to putting Ben down for a nap and have some pure, no kids allowed, personal time. Nope. Ben had other plans. Now, he is only 14 months old, so this came as a shock. He was having NONE of the nap thing. He very clearly pointed me to move to the kitchen and get him something to eat. As I reached for the box of Kix, he shook his head and pointed patiently to the box of Cheerios as if to say, "No way lady. I'm in charge here."
I was then instructed to move into the family room, and here's the kicker, turn on the Ipod. At first I thought he wanted the books that were right in front of the speakers. No. He wanted music, and he wanted it loud. I turned it on and sat back to watch my little man shake his booty and march around in total happiness. Who knew? After eating his fill of Cheerios, we moved back into the kitchen where he very clearly motioned, grunted, and pointed that he wanted milk. In a bottle. And to be held. So there you go. My kids know how to completely work me and get what they want. Each had their agenda on that first day of school.

Your kids are so good looking. I can't believe that they are so ready to be in charge of their own days. Have fun with that...

So does this mean that if you go back to school you get to have your own agenda? :)

Way funny! Your kids crack me up! I think maybe Ben was partying a little getting to be the only kid at home for a little while!

They are just so pretty! It sounds like your little 14 month old and my little 14 month old are in kahoots. I get bossed around in grunts as well, and then I laugh bc I obey grunts, etc. When the milk cup gets filled she points emphatically at the microwave, as in "Now heat it!" I love his red shoes, and I too am waiting to find that precious "me time" during preschool. Only two days so far but I haven't seen had it yet for one reason or another. And I though Boo would be more appreciative of having me all to herself but she seems a litle ungrateful about it so far. Hmm.

I love seeing that huge smile on afton's face with her cute little back pack.
