The Adventure of Making a Bunk Bed

Last weekend we were spoiled by a visit from my dad. I used my special daughter powers to convince him to work on a project with me while he was here. And because he's really much better at these kinds of projects that I am, and I am not really in my top physical shape, he took it and ran. Wahoo!
Since #3 is coming in about five months, we want to start the process of getting Afton and Ben to share a room. Afton has been begging us for a bunk bed for a long time and it turns out this was the right time to do it!
My dad searched out bunk bed plans and all the strategies and made sure we could do it with our meager tools of a circular saw, a drill/driver, and electric sanders. It was so nice that he was in charge of this project because I really didn't have much knowledge of what to do, although I had the desire. :)
Here is mid-cutting, mid-sanding of the lumber:
It looks like it's snowing in our garage, but it's actually just saw dust that was EVERYWHERE. Our garage smelled like a yummy pine forest for a week, which was fine with me!
The we started to measure and drill holes. I was in charge of measuring and my prego brain let me down in a significant way. But we covered up my big mistakes and moved ahead! Here is the bottom bunk (cause it's a cool bunk bed that can also be two separate beds) assembled and inside:
Next came the top bunk pieces:
And finally we got to jump around on it to make sure it was secure. Fabulous!
The kids are very giddy about the new bed. Although we haven't merged them into one room yet (still need to get Afton brave enough to sleep on the top), it is a super fun project to have done. It has already been decorated by some of Afton's vinyl stickers (until I get the energy to paint it all) and is the best dolly sleeping area there ever was.
Thanks Grandpa Wayne for the BEST Christmas present ever!

I love that last picture...so very cute. I love the bunk bed! Looks like fun. Now in a few years it will be like our house, and you will hear loud thumps coming from the room, and the kids will be jumping from the top bunk on to piles of blakents, and lots of other fun things that bunk beds were never intended for!

What a great bonding time! :) What talent! It reminds me of my parents doing things like that when I was a kid. Way to be awesome!

That is such an awesome bed. YOu better be careful or you might be having people ask your husband to help them make one. Good job, they look great!
